About Resume's and CV's

Author: LEW1S STRATT0N

What is a Resume?

This term is often used to describe a work history document provided to employers. However, strictly speaking, Resumes are an abbreviated document in which the key points of knowledge, skills and experience are outlined for an employer. Resumes tend to focus more heavily on achievements and outcomes particularly where these are relevant to the position or job for which an applicant is applying. When reading Resumes you will tend to see that recency and relevance are drivers for material included. Common mistakes in preparing a Resume include providing irrelevant work history, training or personal details.

What is a Curriculum Vitae?

Curriculum Vitaes - CV - are strictly speaking a full work history with knowledge, skills and experience dated back to commencement in the workforce. Membership of associations, publications and professional subscriptions are often included in Curriculum Vitaes. Although the style of writing and presentation is not worlds apart, Curriculum Vitaes - CV - tend to be more lengthy and detailed. Aspects of professional history that are less recent and less relevant to the position sought are often included. This is often true in particular professions where good character is deemed to be of paramount importance. For example, no matter how knowledgeable, skilled and experienced a doctor or lawyer might be, they are often required to demonstrate a lifelong track record of excellence and integrity. Notwithstanding, Curriculum Vitaes should avoid excessive verbiage and be presented in the most straightforward manner possible.
